Culinary Heaven – The Shack Food & Drinks at Cavellosim, Goa

Spicy, Colourful and Varied – The Shack Food of Goa would put most countries to shame. The vibrant mix of ethnicities – Indian, French and Portuguese lends unique bursts of flavours that are hard to come by.

Add to this a mélange of tropical fruits, exotic vegetables and fresh sea food, and you get a spectacular dish that is hard to resist.

Lovely Beach Shacks to Enjoy Goa’s Cullinary Paradise

We have spent hours on a beach shack tasting delicacies and we can vouch for the fact that South Goa in general and Cavellosim Beach in particular is no less than a ‘Culinary Paradise’.

Let’s give you a glimpse of the different cuisines we relished on-

1) Tiger Prawn and Squids

Yummillicious Tiger Prawns – A Must Try for Every Foodie!!!

Both the starters were as fresh as could be, complete with the lingering scent of the sea.

2) Crab Meat

This is a delicacy you just cannot afford to miss. The delicious flavor of crab meat coupled with the tanginess of the broth made it perfect!

Heavenly Delight. . .The Fresh Sea Crabs!!! Gets my mouth dripping even now

Our server at the Island Dish Beach Shack showed us the right way to eat the crabs. You need to cut them cross-sectionally across the lower abdomen.

3) Goan Fish and Pomfret

Delicious Goan Pomfret! – Lost Count on how many times and varieties we had. . .

Meticulously cooked with the right mix of spices, with the sweet tangy fix of flavours, they hit all the right notes. Both curries were fragrant and cooked to perfection.

4) Baby Sharks

Shark Meat has always been an integral part of Goan diet. A spicy sour dish prepared with kokum and chillies make up for the ‘amboktik’ or the gravy. As tasty as the dish is, it sure has a peculiar odour to it which needs some getting used to.

Drinks

You can go for virgin flavours or suit your taste buds to the tastiest mix of cocktails.

Powered by a generation that loves its ‘happy hours’ about as hard as it is bent on going local, Goa has become the epicenter of India’s thriving craft spirit industry.

The new waves of best drinks are the pride of local bars, the inspiration behind some of the most imaginative cocktails you can sample anywhere in the country.

1) Pinnacoladaala Pineapple

The perfect blend of ounces of cream of coconut and freshly squeezed pineapple juice, a slight sprinkle of lime juice and a few ounces of light rum yields a smooth, frothy super delicious cocktail, better known as GoanPinnacolada or Pinnacoladaala ‘pineapple.

2) Feni

Goa’s staple drink and something you can’t escape unless you are living under a rock. Feni was introduced by the Portuguese in the 16th century and is prepared mainly from cashews or coconut palm sap.

The drink is served anywhere from beach shacks and cheap motels to high end bars and 5 star restaurants and in a lot of variations like mixed in cocktails, lemonades, juices or straight up shots. Be wary if you are trying it for the first time as Feni contains over 43% alcohol.

3) Sula Wine

If you are a wine fanatic, straightaway head to the lavish vineyards of margao for an exotic Sula wine experience.

Prepare to drown in the flavours and tannins as you sip from your rose tinted glasses beside the sea. . .

4) Port-wine

If there was a silky smooth texture missing in Sula-wine, Port wine more than makes up for it. A combination of favourites Black Grapes, Brandy/Vodka/Gin/Feni, some extra spices and some selected spices gives you a silky feel in your tongue and a spicy warmth in your throat.

Do not miss tasting this variety of wine when you are chilling in Goa – the Portuguese be thanked for introducing this gem!

5) Armada

Sip on the dark amber spirit drink on a lazy day at the beach. Experience the opening topnotes of cardamom, cinnamon and orange and then you slowly get hints of turmeric, cloves and other spices. If I may say, Armada has extremely long legs – it seems to linger forever on the palate.

If however you are a non-drinker, you can always binge on fresh coconut and sugarcane juice along with a wide range of delicious mocktails. Rest assured, South Goa will never disappoint you if you know your pick!

Conclusion

The menu offered delectable sea-food offerings. It is a foregone conclusion that the bulk of the travel budgetwill go to Goa’s watering hole – so why not try something new? But to know what’s riding the crest, or what’s brand new and buzzy, your key is to skip to the good part!
